My Story
Amila Gammana strengthens the Drayton Valley Health Services Foundation with a unique blend of civic leadership, cross-cultural insight, and community-building expertise. Elected to Drayton Valley Town Council in 2017, Amila has spent nearly a decade championing policies that welcome newcomers, promote social inclusion, and foster economic vitality—priorities that align closely with the Foundation’s goal of equitable, community-centred healthcare.

Drawing on his own journey as a former international exchange student, Amila understands the barriers newcomers often face in accessing services and feeling at home in a rural community. His advocacy has led the Town to formally recognize cultural observances such as Diwali, Ramadan, and the Lunar New Year, demonstrating a firm commitment to honouring the traditions and wellbeing of all residents.
Amila also spearheaded Drayton Valley’s successful application to Alberta’s Rural Renewal Stream, a program designed to attract and retain skilled workers while supporting local businesses. By addressing workforce shortages and encouraging population growth, the initiative directly benefits regional healthcare capacity—an outcome the Foundation strives to advance.

Outside of municipal government, Amila lives Rotary International’s motto of “Service Above Self.” He actively forges partnerships among civic groups, the Drayton Valley Multicultural Association, and grassroots volunteers to deliver programs that strengthen social cohesion and wellbeing. His knack for inclusive messaging and event promotion ensures new residents are informed, engaged, and empowered to participate in community life.
Through his proven leadership, cultural fluency, and forward-thinking approach to rural development, Amila provides the Foundation with valuable perspective on how inclusive communities drive healthier outcomes for everyone. His ongoing commitment to diversity, economic resilience, and public service makes him an indispensable asset to our mission of advancing health and wellness across Drayton Valley and the surrounding region.
